Tricia – We'll probably end up purchasing one mattress at a time, as you suggest. It makes the most sense. But when we saw the pure delight and anticipation in the girls' eyes when they walked into our cabin at Cedar and thought that the two matching twin beds were for them (they were actually for Jason & I), we had to re-consider purchasing a matched set. We'll probably just purchase a wooden portable crib for our littlest latex mattress, and a twin bed/frame for Maya.

Both Tricia and Kate point out that a mattress is a worthwhile investment, and I heartily agree. I would love natural latex for the whole family, if we could afford it–it lasts practically forever, repels dust mites, and is supportive and comfortable. (The cheapest price I found for a twin 100% natural latex is $749.) The cotton futon I alluded to in my post (for $260) is projected by the company to last 3-5 years with heavy use and little care, and 10-15 with proper care (flipping, turning, airing in sunshine 2x/year, cotton mattress pads, etc). So again I wonder: is it worth it to invest in something that may not last them until college? I don't know. A few hundred dollars more would at least get us a cotton futon wrapped in wool, which would repel dust mites and other critters for longer than cotton alone.
