To answer your direct questions from my humble experience…Do we need 3-6 crib sheets and 3-6 waterproof mattress pads?We got by just fine with 3 crib sheets and 3 mattress pads. We didn’t get the kind of mattress pad that stretched around the mattress. We got the flannel waterproof pad type that was slightly smaller than the size of the mattress. In fact, we only regularly used 2 of each the entire time he was in the crib and the 3rd were for the occasional backup when his diaper leaked or when he was sick and threw up or something. We still had a 4th crib sheet still in its package brand new that we sold at the consignment sale.and 3-6 changing pad covers?God no. We didn’t even use the one that came with the changing pad. In the beginning we would just lay one of those cloth diapers on his pad. Until we got good at it, there were plenty of leaks (as in explosive poo once you took the diaper off) and pee spraying everywhere. It was so much more convenient to just toss the cloth diaper in the wash and use clorox wipes to sanitize the pad. As he outgrew the cloth diaper, we nixed it altogether. Personally, I find it more sanitary to not have a terry cloth wrap on my changing pad. We keep a roll of clorox wipes to keep the pad nice and clean.and 4-8 baby wash clothes?Sad to say, but yes. Adult wash cloths are very rough on their skin – especially their face. Oliver still hates it when I use one on him and he’s 15 months old. Also, when they are little 0 – 6 months – we were very careful about contaminating him and spreading germs, etc… during the cold and flu season. That meant a new wash cloth every day to wipe his face down or to bathe him with. and 3-6 swaddling blankets?Nope. I would have been mad to pay for swaddling blankets once I learned the secret of how to swaddle with a receiving blanket. I will hook you up with the video. Oliver liked to be swaddled for probably 6-8 weeks and then he would freak out at being confined.then there’s the co-sleeper…?Not sure what this is. We have a bassinet that I kept by the bed. For that I used 2 bassinet sheets and my ever trusty cloth diaper to lay underneath him when he slept and leaked/oozed/dribbled. For the first week, he slept in bed with us. I used the pad from his bassinet and then rolled up towels on either side of him. This time, we bought a sleep positioner that is more firm. I used a receiving blanket underneath and/or cloth diaper. BTW, he slept in his bassinet next to the bed until 7 weeks. The bassinet isn’t anything special – it’s like a basket on wheels, but it was great because it was so portable. I wheeled that thing all over the house. During the day, it was right next to the glider so when we finished breastfeeding I dumped him right into the bassinet. At night, I wheeled it to my side of the bed. I even wheeled him in the bathroom so I could shower. For the living room, we used a nice big laundry basket with a folded up towel in the bottom. And, what kind of diapers do we need for a boy? Huggies? Pampers? Once we decide on a brand, do we get swaddlers or newborn? What if Lil’ D is bigger than the newborn size? Diapers – I tried every brand out there and found that LUVS were the worst diapers ever for Oliver. They have too many rows of gathering around the leg openings and they would dig into his skin. We didn’t like the generic walmart brand or the generic kroger brand either. Otherwise, huggies or pampers work fine for newborns. As far as swaddlers or not – it’s not going to matter too much. In the beginning you will be going through a minimum of 10-12 diapers a day. The really cool diapers that we liked have a pee strip down the front of the diaper. The strip changes color when the diaper is wet. – Very helpful for new parents! I think those are swaddlers, but both brands might have them for newborns. They use those diapers in the hospital. Get some of those as baby’s pee is pretty much clear and until you get the hang of it it’s hard to tell if he went. As for quantity – Oliver was 8 lbs when he was born. I think we went through 3 small packs of newborn diapers before we moved up to the next size. I wouldn’t stock up on them beyond 2 packs until you know how big he is. But by all means – stock up on the next size!!! and I think the next size has the pee strip too. Once you get to the next size after, they stop doing it.
