Topper High Density
Latex mattress or memory foam mattress?
I need a new mattress! I am by no means wealthy. I cannot decide if I should go with a latex mattress(2 in latex 6 in high density foam) with a memory foam topper (cost about $670) or buy a memory foam mattress with a latex topper (cost about $500) Will the memory foam mattress hold up? I am mattress shopping retarded so any experience/knowledge would be very helpful 
I do not know where you are from but I bought a foam memory mattress from a place called Bob's Discount Furniture. I live in the state of NJ and the warehouse for Bob's is in the state of Connecticut. I was very unsure of the memory foam mattress. When I went to Bob's they have all the displays of all the furniture and beds set up with the mattresses on the floor, so you can look, sit, lay down, to get an idea if it will be comfortable and if you will like it.
I looked at all the beds and mattresses and found the memory foam to be more than comfortable. It is suppose to be good for the back and last a very long time. I chose the memory foam because it was the most comfortable. The price was reasonable and it came with a warranty and I bought a goof proof extended warranty to be safe. When I placed my order I had to wait for it to be delivered from the warehouse in Connecticut.
Well I love the mattress and my back and sleeping habits have improved. I get a better nights sleep on it than any other mattress. I have had it for over a year now and it is still like new. I bought a special kind of mattress cover from Bob's when I was there to protect the mattress better. It is water and stain proof and makes no crinkling noises.
It is a special kind of material that makes no noise at all and yet it protects the mattress totally. The mattress comes in twin, full, queen, and king. The bigger the mattress the more it will cost as with all mattresses and things. It is your decision but the memory foam is the best I have ever had and is suppose to last for a long time. You can always ask the sales person about a warranty or what the life expectancy would be. Well hope you find what your looking for good luck and pleasant dreams.

Higher density memory matress topper mean its better?
I was thinking of buying a memory foam matress topper. I was looking at a 4 inch one I think the density was like a 5.5.
Is that good? What should I look for on one of these toppers anyway???
If the 5.5 means 5.5 pound, then yes, it should be a good quality foam. The density is a weight-per-volume measurement, so a 5 pound foam has more material than a 4 pound one. Less foam means more air in the final product, and I don't think you're wanting to buy just air! I wouldn't recommend less than 4# foam, but your 5.5# sounds good. See if the sales person will let you try one in the store, or at least show you a sample you can press your hand into. If gentle pressure allows your hand to gently sink in, then leave a slowly recovering impression of your hand, it's probably OK. Shop around and try different samples to see the difference.
4" memory foam is more than I usually sell for a topper - typically most of my customers are perfectly happy with 2". You only want enough to gently cradle your body, without sinking into it so much that your body sags and you then don't have proper support.
Keep in mind that memory foam uses your body heat and pressure to mold itself to your shape. It also retains more of that heat, since you are touching (or nearly so) more of it with more of your body. So it keeps you warmer! If you're a 'hot' sleeper (kicks the covers off, or needs a fan), you might rethink this option, since you may feel like you're roasting with it. If you like to be cozy warm when you sleep, go for it! Personally, I sleep very well on 2" of 5# memory foam.
