Bed Headboard Foam
I need advice on upholstering/doing up a drab old bed?
I have a wood and metal bed frame that I want to jazz up to look abit nicer in the guest room! I was thinking about hard boarding the headboard and the footboard, but how would i fix it on?? And then covering the hard board with some foam and upholstering the headboard with some fabric - will this work??
Anyone done anything similiar?
Yes you can do this very easily if you know what you are doing.
I have done allot of upholstering over the past ten years,..i did it for my Bed ,..my old Sofa,...and a footstool i made for my dresser in my Bedroom.

Building A Headboard
Tatami Bed?
Hello I was looking into getting a new bed and came across a Tatami bed.
Here's where I need help though. My current bed (for the past 5 or so years) is actually a futon-sofa bed. After about 2 years the "matress" has gone flat in many areas and was giving me bad shoulder pains. I got one of those ~$100 foam covers but it seems that is going flat as well. The other morning I woke up at 6 to get a drink of water, 45 minutes later I woke up again on my shoulder and it was hurting. There's also a mini foot/headboard on it too, and I'm 6'2" 145lbs. so I have to sleep diagonal a lot or else my feet hurt in the morning.
As far as the Tatami bed goes, are you supposed to just sleep on the tatami or are you supposed to put sheets/a matress on top of it? Here's a similar one I was looking at:

And finally, is it comfortable? I'm willing to try new things and not use a matress anymore
As the site implies, you can place a futon or mattress on top of the tatami (which means you would then dress your futon/mattress as usual with sheets, etc.) or you can place the mattress directly onto the raku bed slats without the tatami mats.
It's a common problem with futons - the foam wearing out. The problem is that the foam is generally not thick enough if the futon is going to be used as a bed on a steady basis. In that case, the futon foam is recommended to be at least 6" and preferabley 7" thick at the very least.
Being that you are so tall, it's not good for you to be scrunching your body up to try to sleep on a futon. I have a friend who is 6'6" tall and he improvised nicely and for a very cheap price.
He purchased two flat doors and hinged them together on what would be the 'underside'; he then screwed legs into the edges of each door (6 each door/3 each side) and this made a very inexpensive platform bed. He put a 5" foam mattress on top of this and more than 10 years later he is still sleeping comfortably! By the way, you can also use storage bins instead of legs and then you will have the extra storage space.
