In the late 1800s, box springs were invented, allowing beds to better maintain their shape, providing a smooth surface for sleepers for the first time.
The greatest strides in sleep technology began in the 20th century. Beginning with innersprings in the 1930s, the first foam mattresses in the 1950s, the waterbeds of the 1960s, the creation of memory foam by NASA in the 1970s, and the rubber air mattresses of the 1980s, the past century provided the framework for the modern bedding choices of today.
