Are leather or vinyl couches somewhat waterproof?
Like if you spill some water on them, will it ruin the cushioning underneath or will the leather or vinyl hold it on top.
I'm asking because I have a dog. He had a pee accident one time on my old sofa. I threw out the sofa, it was a cotton material.
So for my next sofa, I wondered if it would be good to get a leather one or vinyl one. Would the top material be waterproof?
depends. vinyl isn't exactly "waterproof"(unless it states that it is waterproof vinyl), and if he pees on the sofa while you aren't home, it will soak into the material and the cloth backing can get wet, and
wet = moldy (eventually) and smelly. for the most part, if something happens and you are home, the vinyl would work alright for you. leather would stain, most definitely, as it is porous and would soak up the liquid. unless (as someone said before) you treated it with a waterproofer.
it all depends on your budget, but you should know that leather and vinyl do not behave the same. (also as a side note, my mom bought a "leather" sofa that turned out to only be leather on the top cushions and vinyl everywhere else and the vinyl got all cracked after only a few years. since it is a big investment, make sure you do your research.)
there are treatments for fabric that are used in hospitals, etc.(ie: where people pee on things) called Crypton & Nanotex. These treatments (not something you do yourself, but the fabric would already have them) would be waterproof. in which case, if there was liquid on the fabric it would simply sit on top of the fabric. and with Crypton and Nanotex, you notice no difference in the feel of the fabric. so you still get to have a nice soft sofa, which is also waterproof for your dog! you might have to get a sofa custom upholstered in this fabric, though i am not sure. i will include some links for a little more information about these treatments.
Teflon and Scotchguard are treatments that can be applied to fabrics and do much the same thing, although i think they give a plasticy feel to the fabric.

I need an idea on how to keep my futon mattress from slipping?
The futon frame is steel. The mattress is covered in a cotton cover, probably completely typical to all futons. But, I keep it in the upright position and use it as my sofa. For some reason, and it drives me crazy, when someone sits on it the mattress starts slipping down. So, the top of the futon framework becomes visible and looks awful. I try to fluff it up again, but then it slips again.
The seating part (the bottom) is not angled down, in fact, it is angled inward. But still, the mattress slips down and probably eventually wants to make its way to the floor. Drives me nuts, and I can't afford a new one or a sofa. Help?
how about that rubber stuff that you put under carpets?
