Can I keep my baby directly on the bed with me ? I heard that babies need to sleep on firm mattresses. Our bed is firm with a pillow top. Can the baby sleep with us on that ? Also are wedges required on both sides of the baby ? What are the ways one can co-sleep such that the baby is safe ?
Never when you're overtired, or have been drinking or taking drugs. And never if you smoke - that's a risk factor for SIDS. You don't want big fluffy pillows or quilts that could suffocate the baby, either. The baby should be face up - I believe the firm mattress thing is only if you sleep the baby face down, which is now not recommended. Oh, and don't fall asleep on a sofa with the baby.
With regard to wedges and such, what you'll likely find is that you end up kind of "shielding" the baby with your arm, especially if you're breastfeeding through the night.

Look at the center of the pictures of all three.
Phillip, I wish the picture was taken at the exact same angle of the 1979 and 1998 photos, but I guess beggars can't be choosers.
What I find funny is peoples belief that glaciers should never recede. How the heck do they know that they shouldn't recede?
Especially when we take in the facts that glaciers have been receding since the beginning of this interglacial period. If they didn't New York, Wisconsin, Minnesota (All the little states above New York, and a bunch of other states and Canada would still be buried under a glacier so thick no life could live in that area. But the AGW believers are going to believe what they want to believe and no amount of proof is going to change that.
