mass spectrometer and life on mars- what's the deal with NASA saying that they cannot find organic compounds?
having taken an organic chem class or two, I know what a M.S can do, and I know that one can i.d. organic compounds. why does NASA give a different story?
As in any organic reaction, the specific oxidant, specific ambient conditions, and specific catalysts determine what intermediates will accumulate in the oxidative degradation of organic compounds on Mars.
If the compounds were initially organic, the powerful oxidants on the surface of Mars will cause them to break down to CO2. NASA said on the "surface" of Mars, not "on" Mars. Organic molecules could be hidden deep within the planet. Then again maybe not.

If NASA finds organic compounds in Mars' ice...?
If NASA finds organic compounds in the ice it's digging up from Mars, do you think a lot of people will deny it in some way? Perhaps because they think that NASA could've brought the compounds from Earth by not being careful enough?
Just because something is an organic compound doesn't necessarily mean that it was the byproduct or evidence of life...
For example, methane is an organic compound which makes up many of the gas giants. Does that mean there's life there? No.
But assuming by organic you meant something that's evidence of possible life - there will always be people who are skeptical. Take for example all the people that ask if we really landed on the moon on yahoo answers. Honestly though, satellites are assembled in some of the best clean rooms to avoid this kind of cross-contamination.
