Memory Foam Mattress Topper: Adding Comfort
A memory foam mattress topper is placed on top of your current mattress to get more density and comfort. Also, it can help create a flatter surface to sleep on if your mattress has depressions or lumps.
Studies have shown that approximately 9 out of every 10 users of memory foam report that they have added more comfort and ultimately allowed them to get better sleep consistently.
The price range for toppers varies quite a bit, anywhere from $50 to $300. It depends primarily on the quality, density, and the brand.
When you first sleep on one, they are a bit firm and difficult to move around on. Memory foam is sensitive to temperature, and so it will take a little while for it to get accustomed to your body. As a result, knowing exactly which mattress topper to buy is difficult until you sleep on it for a week or so.
Before Buying A Mattress Topper
If possible, lie down on a topper in various sleeping positions for a little while to get a good feel for it. This will help you avoid buying one that doesn't suit you properly.
No matter how much you like the first topper, lie down on as many as you can so you can accurately compare one to another. Some are more comfortable and ultimately provide more support than others.
The thickness of the memory foam mattress should at least be two inches, though three is much more prefered. The minimum density should be three pounds, though 4 pounds is more ideal. Five pounds and above is the highest level and also the most expensive. The more dense a topper is, the more firm it is. If you want it to be softer, then a lower density would be a better choice for you.
Always know how long the warranty is. 10 years should be the minimum, but 20 is ideal.
Pros and Cons
Whether you get a mattress topper or mattress, you will be gaining additional comfort and support. Memory foam is designed to reduce pressure points and provide pain relief in joints, back, shoulders, and so on. You won't wake up in the morning with stiffness either that most of us get from spring mattresses. You also won't be tossing and turning quite so much.
Quality memory foam is also very durable and will help you get better sleep for years to come.
One of the downsides is that it's not for everyone. Some people just can never completely adjust to it. Also moving is more difficult because you sink down into the mattress.

Memory Foam Topper 3-inch
Memory Foam Mattress?
Has anyone NOT slept comfortably on one of these? My husband and I just bought a 3 inch topper, and I toss and turn on it... you see all the praise about it online, so I was wondering if I'm the only one?
I don't know how to tell my husband, He has back problems and thinks this will help, and it may for him,we have only had it for 3 nights, but I guess I'll just cut it in half and he can sleep on it.
No, you are not the only one, I saw these, saw all the hype about them, had to have one, got one, my husband and I slept on it two nights then gave it away and drug our old mattress out of storage, we hated it!

Memory foam mattresses - the thicker the better?
So I'm currently doing a lot of online research to help my decision in purchasing a memory foam mattress.
As I continue reading reviews, product descriptions, etc. I notice that these memory foam mattresses have varying amounts of actual memory foam material on top.
For example, a 10-inch one I'm looking at has 3 inches of memory foam and then 7 inches of basic foam or mattress layer underneath (not sure which).
The 12 inch has 2.5 in memory foam up top and a 9.5 in base.
So my question is what difference does the amount of topper foam on these mattresses have?
Is thicker memory foam better or is it just relative to preference?
Is more really better?
Any help will be much appreciated, thanks!
The base foam on a memory foam mattress is only for underlying support and is a secondary factor in selecting a quality memory foam mattress. As long as the base foam layer is over 8cm deep, then the foam density is more important than the depth of this layer, with anything over 8cm really produced to 'fool' consumers into thinking a mattress with a deeper overall depth is 'better' than that of another. (The base foam is the cheapest part of the mattresses components, using a 15cm deep layer with 5cm of memory foam on top gives the impression it's a 'quality' 20cm deep mattress, however the mattress may as well be only 13cm deep, as the additional base foam added to 'bulk' out the overall depth flatters to deceive…)
There are certain scenarios where a deeper base foam layer is useful, for example if the combined weight of the 2 users is over 32 stone, however the density of the base foam is in fact much more important than any depth over 8cm - the density, not the thickness of the layer, will ultimately dictate how long the mattress lasts you - anything below 40kg/m3 density base foam then the mattress will feel soft and the life expectancy dramatically reduced. The density of the base foam also has a part to play in how firm or soft the overall mattress feels.
The memory foam depth and layer is of course also very important. Again, the density and quality of the memory foam being even more important than anything else.
